The 6 Steps To Recovering Your Laptop Data

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Laptops are concentrations of high technologies, so data recovery on notebook computers seems a mysterious secret world where only geeks can succeed.

The Reality is that a great part of this world is accessible to almost all of us. Well of course in the event of shock, water projection or any other accident that can cause a physical destruction of your laptop, you will be certainly forced to call a specialized firm.

However in the other cases the methods functioning on simple PC for the recovery, function almost all on the notebooks.

You can recover most of the data easily with a simple software in the event of losses of data due for example to a partitioning, a failure of the files system, or a fast formatting.

Well what to do when you lose your data?

1. Immediately turn off your laptop to stop any writing operation on the disc.

2. Go to the nearest PC dealer an buy a 2.5″ USB case(take care about the ATA and SATA connectivity).

3. Carefully uninstall your drive (there are many manuals on the web that explain how to do this).

4. Mount your drive in the case.

5. Install recovery software on another PC.

6. Connect your drive on this PC and follow the recovery instructions of your software(check before if you have enough space on your PC drive to make the recovery).

Note that the base of a good restoration is to cease any activity on the disc at the time you detect the loss of data.

And remember that there is no better way to avoid the loss of data than to make backups and secure your system.

Office Suites – Don’t Buy Them – Get Them For Free!

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In this digital age, our business relies so much on computers and technology to make our jobs faster and easier. Still, as much as we need technology, we have to admit that a substantial amount of our expenses goes into these technology investments, particularly on computer software, when in reality we would have wanted to spend in more profit-generating activities.

Therefore, why not get these software for free instead? You can start with getting free desktop applications. Computers are virtually useless without office suite applications. An office suite is a package containing more than one common, ready-to-use desktop applications such as a word processor, a spreadsheet program, a presentation manager, and others that assist you with your work at the office or at home. Here are just a few of the office suites you can get without having to spend a single cent:

1) StarOffice

Developed by Microsoft’s adversary, Sun Microsystems, StarOffice created much excitement during its release as the first ever office suite available for free, and can even run on all three major operating systems (Windows, Linux and UNIX). As the suite evolves and improves, many users find it very powerful and easy to use compared to Microsoft Office. Whatever Microsoft Office does, StarOffice can do better. Unfortunately, since more than five years ago, Sun Microsystems has discontinued providing this suite for free, although the older StarOffice version 5.2 is still available for free download outside of Sun Microsystems’s web site. Good news for users comes in the form of another free suite that is…

2) OpenOffice.org

OpenOffice, an open-source initiative started by a group of people in Germany, caught the attention, and later the financial support, of Sun Microsystems. Slightly buggy than the stable and powerful StarOffice, this suite nonetheless is as competitive as StarOffice and Microsoft Office. OpenOffice developments provide benchmarks and basis for later versions of StarOffice as both suites are continuously improved. Important capabilities such as PDF file conversions and file type compatibilities are conveniently built into OpenOffice without the extra cost involved, compared to what you have to spend when using Microsoft Office. Runs on most major operating platforms just like StarOffice, OpenOffice is well-suited for virtually everyone who needs quality desktop applications for the price of zero.

3) KOffice

KOffice is developed for use on KDE (K Desktop Environment), a Linux-based operating system, although this office suite can run on any other Linux distributions. Therefore, Linux users can count themselves lucky, since KOffice has the most extensive set of tools around (11 applications) compared to any free or paid office suites. Every component of the KOffice application works seamlessly with one another, by allowing any KOffice document to be embedded with other KOffice files. In order to open other document types, such as Word, PDF and WordPerfect documents, KOffice provides file filters to convert to and from different files. Obviously, Linux users will find this suite most suited to them, if their Linux distributions do not come with one already.

4) NeoOffice

NeoOffice is a version of OpenOffice.org specially modified to run under Apple’s Mac OS X computers. You can expect basically the same functionalities and a little bit more compared to OpenOffice, and with the FOC (free of charge) tag, of course. Although OpenOffice itself does have a Mac OS release, NeoOffice provides more specialized Mac OS functions such as fonts supports, better PDF generation, accessibility options such as voice recognition, and spotlight document indexing. NeoOffice is suited for SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) using mainly Mac OS as their operating system, whereas larger organizations are better off using OpenOffice’s Mac OS version, which can handle millions of processes meant for a larger number of users.

5) Online office suites

The most exciting advancement in office suite development has got to be the emergence of Web-based office applications that can emulate exactly what its client-side counterparts could, thanks to the existence of AJAX, the most talked about programming language around. Two of the most popular online suites include Google Docs & Spreadsheets and Zoho, both of which are 100% free and ready for use. There are only two requirements for using these suites, that you must have an Internet connection and that you have a web browser. The best function of an online office suite is its ability to share your documents to anyone in the Internet for collaborative use. Also, imagine not having to worry about:

- whether the office suite is compatible with your Windows, Linux or Mac operating systems — web applications are cross-platform compatible

- whether or not you have the latest patches or security updates for your office applications

- whether or not you have the latest version of your software

In future developments, you will also have the option to install it in your company’s intranet servers, should you need to deploy it without the need for 24-hour Internet access. Online office suites are very suited to the “road warriors,” that is, IT-savvy users who constantly travel and who require online access anywhere they are.

Now that you know your option, why not start using one right away? No more burdens about spending on those expensive extra software licenses. Start experiencing the savings you can get by using these free and wonderful office suites, and soon you might even start asking, “Microsoft Office? What’s that?”

Huge Landslide Destroys Ski Resort

Image : http://www.flickr.com

On July 30, 1997 a huge landslide rolled over the Thredbo Ski village in Australia causing massive damage and virtually burying the resort; cars, buildings, people and all! The loose earth, rock, and foliage swept down the slope and crashed into the Bimbadeen Lodge, a multi-level building, used to house guests. Eighteen people died as a direct result of the landslide, most were buried alive.

The landslide brought one thousand tones of earth, rock, trees and debris down the slope of the mountain cutting a four hundred meter wide swath. Rescue efforts where made even more difficult due to the occurrence of secondary minor landslides, and unstable soft earth.

The damage to the resort was devastating. Sheared water, gas, and oil lines had to be capped before rescue operations could even begin. It took 55 hours before any survivors could even be located. Many vehicles where destroyed by the flowing earth. The Carinya lodge was swept right off its foundations and hurled into the Bimbadeen Lodge. Both multi-floor buildings where completely crushed as a result of the landslide.

The social impact on the resort was substantial. Tourism to the resort dropped as a result of the landslide. Most people where afraid to return to the area. Many people suffered trauma from the event and still experience nightmares, and other such medical or psychological conditions.

The economic impact to the area was of course very significant. Business to the resort obviously came to a full stop. Millions of dollars had to be spent to repair and rebuild the facility and it took quite a long time to complete the repairs and reopen for business. Lost revenues from the closure and from the reduced level of tourism were enormous.

Landslides are not often considered to be significant issues in so far as natural disasters are concerned. They usually occur in more isolated areas and their effects are only felt by relatively small local populations. One must realize, however, that in the last one hundred and sixty five years over one hundred and fifty landslides have caused an estimated two hundred million dollars in damages. They have damaged hundreds of buildings, both homes and businesses, and destroyed roads, pipelines, crops, and disrupted local utilities. These same landslides have killed at least 73 people and injured many more. Obviously, such a landslide can cause economic loss and hardship for an operating business. Proper planning is essential to reduce the risks associated with any type of natural disaster.

You can never be too prepared when disaster strikes. Protect yourself from data loss with online backup from Global Data Vault. Avoid downtime, revenue loss and angry customers with remote backup services from Global Data Vault. http://www.globaldatavault.com

A great collection, but...
...with this price tag, who can afford it? Do yourself a favor: Unless you absolutely MUST have ALL of the Captain America stories of the last 40 years on DVD, buy the Iron Man and Avengers collections instead. You'll save yourself a lot of money, and you will still have all of the best Captain America appearances of the Silver Age from Tales of Suspense and the Avengers, including his first Silver Age appearance in TOS (his "appearance" in Strange Tales before that was actually an impersonator, and was an admitted test by Stan Lee to see how many requests they would get to bring Cap back), and his first appearance in the Avengers. When I was a kid, I felt like the story quality went down after the Marvel heroes got their own books, especially the Sub-Mariner, Doctor Strange, Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. (after Jim Sterenko left), and yes, even Captain America (after Kirby stopped penciling it). (If you want to see some really great Captain America artwork, check out Kirby's Golden Age issues. Very stylized, and very dynamic.) The only ones that stayed solid during Marvel's 1968 relaunch were The Incredible Hulk (at least Marie Severin's renditions were easier to stomach than Herb Trimpe's) and Iron Man, but that's just my opinion. I'm sure there are scores of people who disagree with me. I suppose it all boils down to who your favorite artists are. I still feel that Marvel's best efforts over time have always been the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, the X-Men, the Mighty Thor (Kirby's longest run outside of the FF) and, of course, the Amazing Spider-Man. I was a big Doctor Strange fan, but when Steve Ditko left the series, it never quite recovered, which is why it was canceled after only 14 issues. Don't get me wrong; I loved the work that Dan Adkins, Tom Palmer, and Gene Colon did in this series. In fact, it was fantastic. But Ditko invented Dr. Strange. It was his baby, and no one but he could invoke the eerie look and feel of multidimensional travel and the weird entities Dr. Strange met along the way. And when they put a mask on the good doctor, well, that was the end for me. I didn't even wait for the price to go up to 15 cents, even though I thought that the scripting of Roy Thomas was actually better than Stan Lee's. But look how many books he had been writing before Roy came along: practically the entire Marvel line, including Modeling with Millie and the Westerns. Nick Fury also suffered a loss when Jim Steranko left the series, and the Sub-Mariner without that great Gene Colon artwork was like peanut butter without jam. Spider-Man was lucky in the sense that "Jazzy" Johnny Romita's pencils actually took Spidey to new heights of glory (who can forget meeting Mary Jo Watson for the first time), but we will always have Ditko to thank for all of his weird villains like Mysterio, Doctor Octopus, and the Sandman. In retrospect, Marvel might have been better off continuing to print Strange Tales, Tales of Suspense, and Tales to Astonish. Certain characters were strong enough to carry their own book; others were not. And when Marvel increased the cost of a comic book from 12 cents to 15, it was a double-whammy that most fans just could not handle. It was amazing how Jack Kirby stayed with the FF for 102 issues. Even his artwork began to suffer a quality loss towards the end, although much of that had to do with the number of books he was penciling. I heard somewhere that he was pumping out about ten pages a day. Most artists might get one page done per day. The FF has been lucky throughout the years to have been blessed with great writer/artist teams. The same goes for the Avengers and especially the X-Men and Spidey. But I digress. So, you've got 0 to plunk down for this collection that could easily be obtained in reprints for much less? (For that matter, I just checked the Overstreet Guide, and you could buy C.A. 100-150 in Fine for about the same price.) Be my guest...

Here we go again!
Great product but really, 0.00 dollars? REALLY? I mean REALLY?
I have seen this elsewhere for much less than this so I know if you look around you can find it cheaper than this outrageously ridiculous price. If someone does buy this for this price please let me know what you're reasoning is for paying that kind of price. Once again I would like to offer some swampland I have for sale to those who are willing to pay such prices ; )

Nice, but...
UPDATE 4/20/08: AFTER USING THIS PRODUCT FOR SEVERAL DAYS, I WOULD REVISE MY RATING FROM 3 STARS TO 4. IT'S GREAT TO FINALLY READ THESE OLD ISSUES, AND ONCE I GOT READER SET UP JUST FOR READING THESE (TURNED OFF ALL TOOLBARS AND PANELS, "FIT WIDTH") IT'S ACTUALLY A PRETTY NIFTY EXPERIENCE. I STILL WISH THE PDF'S WERE SINGLE PAGES AND THAT PRINTING DIDN'T HAVE THAT AWFUL WATERMARK SMACK IN THE CENTER OF EACH PAGE. BUT OI HAVE TO ADMIT I'M ENJOYING THIS PRODUCT.

Pros:
1) 500 comics for = 10 cents an issue!
2) Complete comics are scanned, so you can read ads, letters pages, etc
3) Since they're scans from real comics, they have that nice desautrated quality you get from ink printed on newsprint (as opposed to the garish colors in the Marvel Masterworks volumes which are printed on highgloss white paper.)

That said, here's why I'm only going this three stars:

Cons:
1) Even with a 17" monitor I find I need to zoom in and scroll around. It's too bad they hadn't developed a "smart panels" feature like they have at Marvel Digital Comics. But, this is basically just a DVD with 500 PDF files on it, so you're stuck using the standard Adobe Reader interface. Not bad, but no nifty navigation tools.

2) Although the files are printable, there's two problems with printing:

FIRST, they print with a big fat MARVEL watermark on the center of each page -- the watermark isn't visible on screen -- which really takes away from the image integrity. I suppose I see the need for this for copyright protection, but still, it's a drag when they advertise these on the box as "printable comics." Of course, if you have a lot of time on your hands, you can do a screen capture, paste them into Photoshop and print them out from there. But sheesh! Not that I planned to print out 500 comics, but it would've been fun to print out some of the old 60s issues.

SECONDLY, the pages are scanned as full spreads. It would have been much nicer if the PDFs were single pages (with "facing pages' turned on in Acrobat). Why do I say that? When you print out a full spread onto typing paper, the individual pages come out quite a bit smaller than a standard comic book. If the pages were separated in the PDF, each page could be printed slightly *larger* than a comic book. (Admittedly, you'd have to trim some margins for the occassional full-spread splashes.)

Silver Age and onward -- good stuff!
GIT really did a fine job with these comic collections. Too bad Marvel is now going totally online and won't let anyone have the actual comics in hand anymore. *sigh* Oh, well -- but if you can get it used (or from GIT), go for it. It's definitely worth the money!

complete comic collection
This DVD rom is the best way to catch up on old back issues. Of any one that collects comics you know that when you're looking of the one issue that you need to complete your collection I am the hardest one to find. But when you buy this DVD rom you get every issue of the title that it is names for.
This box contains every cap issue from the first issue featuring cap in the early 1960 to his death in the pages of civil war.
Cap is a reminder of what America should be, and should be looked at as a role motel for every one in the world

Backup Strategy to Avoid Data Loss & Data Recovery

Image : http://www.flickr.com

You must have always come across the phrase “Data Backup” when you talk about data loss. It’s not that we don’t understand its importance completely but just that we pay little less attention to it than required. Each day, we hear about several data loss incidences seeking data recovery software or data recovery services options. If you feel that your data is valuable, then why not keep it safe? Why not have a Backup strategy?

A concrete backup strategy is important to any recovery plan. The following are the main elements to a solid backup strategy:

Define what type of data needs to be backed up.

You create a variety of documents, customer databases, financial records, or employee records. Hence, by defining the order of importance of data, you should decide on what to backup.

Decide the Backup Media

You must know the storage media for backup. You may consider backup data to be stored from a computer to a rewritable CD or DVD, a network server, a USB key, or a ZIP disk.

Define the time limit you have available for backup.

You must know of the product that is reliable enough to perform the backup at the scheduled time. If you are a traveler and usually connect to the network remotely, then you must know of a backup strategy that covers your information accurately.

Decide the level of access to the information.

You must know the security requirements and concerns, and that your backup software ensures 100% data accuracy while restoring. You must also ensure that your backup software prevents unauthorized access to the information, through a password or a variety of encryption algorithms.

Define the schedule of backups

You must set the schedule of backups i.e. the frequency of backups needs to be determined. You must ensure that all the workstations (from where you need to backup the data) are ‘On’ at the time of performing backups. For remote workers, you must develop standard operating procedures.

Define the backup policies

You must decide when to perform a full system backup or incremental system backup. It is recommended to store the backed up data offsite i.e. you can keep your data in two different locations away from each other.

Work on the ease to backup the data

What if you have successfully performed the data backup but it takes time while restoring it? You must work on the set up where you can backup the data with one command. Agreed that it will take little more time and work but will be very useful when the system crashes.

Perform daily backups

You must ensure that there is less time between the two subsequent backups otherwise if there is longer period between backups, you may lose quite a lot of data.

If you do not understand the way to implement a backup strategy, you might have to check with the local expert.

Stellar a data recovery Software & service company provides range of data recovery software & data protection software. Stellar has recently launched a data backup software i.e. Stellar InstaBackup is very useful software for backing up and protecting valuable data. This software simplifies the process of data backup and is a powerful solution for both business and personal needs. It can also be used both in a networking environment and on a single machine. Although the software is easy to use, a number of advanced options such as Full / Incremental backups, strong File Encryption, and Zip Compression are also available. The software has a simple graphical user interface, requires no prior knowledge of data backup, and is a comprehensive data protection solution for all Windows File Systems.

Most Useful Method To Protect Confidentiality – Wipe Disc

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Disc wiping is a useful method of maintaining confidentiality because deleted files are not often deleted from the hard disk. High security installations like government and security institutions have specific protocol for file deletion. The United states Department of Defense has specified that a file must be overwritten three times. The newer operating systems such as Windows XP and Mac OS X use a journaling file system that renders complete erasure of files almost impossible. Journaling file systems keeps a log in which the changes to a journal is updated before writing it to the main file system. This reduces the chance of a file becoming corrupt in the event of a power failure.

The system accomplishes this task by keeping metadata in various locations in the disc. These metadata are rarely wiped out with a standard file shredder. The task is made harder by fact that these systems often use I/O commands to continuously ferry the data from one location to another. It’s these power enhancing features of the file systems that requires the need to bring in more powerful disc wipes. However, to use a disc wipe one must store the data on a temporary partition by using any journaling or non journaling file system. When its time to wipe all files just uses a disc wipe software such as Eraser to secure the entire segment.

“Disc wipe” softwares work by rapidly overwriting the segment of a drive with nonsensical information. By literally burying the file under multiple layers of garbage the data is rendered practically unrecoverable. Wipe disc works much like your average paper shredder. Though the letters on the scraps of paper are visible it is practically an impossible task to put them back together.

File shredding and disk wiping are commonly confused to be the same. To understand the difference one requires a basic idea of what really happens to a file after it has been deleted. Many a people wrongly assume that by deleting a file they are rendering it impossible to be recovered. The fact is that it’s very much possible to retrieve a deleted file, often pretty much intact. Deleting a file works by removing the address of the file thus rendering it invisible in the directory or index. Theoretically what it means is that the segment is now available to be use for newer data. The data is very much there on your disk until newer files overwrite them.

File shredding is no doubt a good method of obliterating a file it has its limitations. If a defrag utility is used after the original file was saved the file will be scattered on several locations. This renders File shredding ineffective and the only way to assure the total decimation of the file is to “Disk wipe” the entire segment. This obliterates all the files in the entire portion of the disc thus leaving no loop hole for the file to be recovered. Unfortunately, any software that is written can be reverse- engineered which creates loop holes in the usage of any “wiping” software. The only remaining and guaranteed way is to completely destroy the disc by physically melting it or pour acid on it.
